This illustrated book is a journey through Hell, describing its depictions through the ages. Starting from Dante Alighieri and re-narrating his journey in Hell (with a little help of the fabulous engravings by Gustav Dore), the writer (a profound art historian) describes, analyses and criticises famous paintings of artists who tried to draw the Underworld. From early Renaissance with Giotto, Fra Angelico, Michelangelo and Bosch, up to the 20th century, and works by Rothko and Kippenberger, this atmospheric literary journey through art history aims to explore the very essence of the metaphysics of modern man (does the Devil frighten us anymore?), posing, at the same time, vital questions about the role of Art in western history and social institution.

Maria Lekaki was born in 1976. She studied history of art in Sorbonne. She has published articles in art magazines and curated a photographic exhibition.
